The Seven Cows of the Shilluk King

Published on Feb 14, 2013

Our truck blew up in the desert in Sudan. We walked for a hundred kilometres without a drop to drink. We were taken in by King Shilluk’s sentries. During the two months I spent living by his side, I made a surprising discovery. This African King lived like a queen bee: he represented a symbol of fertility for his people and could have as many women as he wanted. The day he could no longer impregnate them however, his throat would be slit. (1978)
